About Speedalight - Speedalight is a web design company established in 2000 by Paul Warrick. Our number one priority is the satisfaction of our customers.

We write all pages in HTML from scratch and follow W3C guidelines on code and accessibilty. For this reason our sites always feature high on search engines. We may use 'bolt-ons' for things like e-commerce but every other part of your web site will be 100% original and we are not satisfied until our clients are completely happy.

So what's the buzz at the moment? 'Content Management Systems' (CMS) see the link above.

This website has been designed to be accessible by all users under the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines W3C for people with different abilities, browsers and specific requirements.

The text size can be adjusted using your browser.
The fonts used throughout the site are recommended for those who are dyslexic
(see www.dyslexic.com/database/articles/fonts.html)

Accessibility - Although this site has been designed with maximum accessiblity in mind, there is a parallel text-only page accessible from the 'About Us' page.

Access Keys

For those unable to use a mouse pointer, access keys are available on all links on the text-only page. Accesskeys are available through the full graphics pages although The Flash© headers or some of the image headers do not have the access key facility. However there is a text based menu on all the pages, usually at the foot of the page.

For the text-only page the relevant access key for each link is either:
a) the first letter of the link text, e.g. for 'Welcome' the access key is 'W'.
b) Where a page has two or more links with the same start letter, the access key has either been added to the end of the text e.g. 'see download section - A' or
c) is shown underlined, e.g. 'see download section' (where the access key is 'o')

How to use access keys:
Depending on your browser type use one of the following:
(i) With Windows-based systems, in general, press the "Alt" key and the relevant access key:
if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4 then press "Alt" and the relevant number/letter at the same time
if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or 6 then press "Alt" and the relevant number/letter, then press the "Enter" key
if you are using Netscape version 6 or later, or Mozilla, then press "Alt" and the relevant number/letter at the same time.
(ii) With Macintosh-based systems, press the "Ctrl" key and the relevant access key.

Content Management Systems - 'Content Management Systems' (CMS) seem to be a big deal right now.

Let’s start at the beginning, what is a content management system (CMS)? - A content management system is a system used to manage and publish web content, i.e. the content of a website, without having to manually edit HTML code. A CMS can be a custom built system, template sites, site builder sites, or blogs. 'Wikipedia' is a good example of a site that uses a content management system.

Everyone thinks: "I can save money if I update my website myself." Not necessarily! If you want to update your site daily then, yes, a CMS could be the answer and we could certainly arrange it all for you. But many people do not need to update their site more than once or twice a month. The costs of a good CMS will far exceed the cost we would charge for updating text and graphical material that infrequently. Additionally, we have heard of many instances where the client goes back to the designer, after running with an expensive CMS for only a short time, saying that an unforseen change is now needed beyond the scope of the Content Management package and they need the expertise of the designer!

Let's look at the pros and cons of CMS:

CMS Pros

* Allow for multiple users
* Ability to easily add/edit web content
* Allows for frequent updates
* Users do not need to be able to write code
* Allows user to easily learn the basics of html
* Web-based CMS can be free or very low cost
* Provides a central hub so all users can keep up to date on site changes
* Sets the stage for uniform pages, so multiple users don’t stray from the overall design
* Some provide attractive templates and imaging.

CMS Cons

* Limited Search Engine Optimisation functionality
* Restricted HTML editing
* Design limitations
* Not keeping up to date with new web standards & innovation
* Difficult to switch web hosts
* Website can look dated
* Website can look like a ‘CMS website’
* Price - Can be very expensive if building a custom system
